India Re-Worlded: Seventy Years of Investigating a Nation
Curated by Dr. Arshiya Lokhandwala
September 11, 2017 until March 31st 2018

India Re-worlded is a survey exhibition of modern and contemporary Indian art that commemorates the 70th anniversary of Independent India. The exhibition is an invitation to 70 artists to examine one year of their choosing from the last 70 years. Artists have choosing to highlight the early years of independence including address the newly written constitution and reforms, marked significant political events, protests, riots, commemorations, assassinations, violence against women, environmental concerns including the domestic and everyday existence. The show encapsulates 70 such moments allowing us to write a unique history of India constructed through these individual moments experienced by the artists in post - independent India.

India Re-worlded is titled after Gayatri Spivak’s concept of worlding, (originally a concept of philosopher Martin Heidegger) which Spivak revisits as a process of violence that emerges during imperialism; in which the colonized territories get deemed as “worlded” once colonized. By extending Spivak’s provocation, I suggest that Indian artists post independence have “de-worlded,” and the artist liberate themselves from the earlier colonial position, dismantle their British colonial legacy, and instead chose to be “re-worlded” within the post-colonial context. This brings with it an individual sense of agency and renewed connection with the world at large. India Re-worlded attempts to present art practices, dialogues, and questions emerging from this framework of postcolonial Indian modernity that allow us to value, understand and experience every year of our independent nation in a unique manner never experienced before.
